Paula Dean & Bobby Flay Cookbooks Among the Worst of Decade (For Your Health)

The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine says many cookbooks from this decade encourage fattening, meat-heavy meals at a time when America grapples with record obesity rates. “You’d need a magnifying glass to find a vegetable in some of these cookbooks, says the organization’s dietitian, Susan Levin. “The good news is that a growing number of chefs are offering tasty meatless recipes that can help us stay trim and healthy.”

The five worst:

* Paula Deen’s Kitchen Classics, by Paula Deen, ($29.95, Random House)

* Mastering the Art of French Cooking, 13th edition, by Julia Child, ($30, Knopf)

* Grilling for Life, by Bobby Flay, ($23.95, Scribner)

* "Better Homes and Gardens New Cook Book: Celebrating the Promise,” ($29.95, Wiley)

* “Bones: Recipes, History and Lore” by Jennifer McLagan, ($34.95, William Morrow Cookbooks)


The five best:

* “The Kind Diet,” by Alicia Silverstone, ($29.95, Rodale)
